An online internship at my law firm can offer a range of valuable experiences and tasks that contribute to understanding legal practice and developing practical skills. Depending on the specific circumstances, you can expect:
- 3–5 online meetings per week via Zoom or, where applicable, MS Teams. There are short check-in meetings as well as longer meetings in which you present your work results.
- Legal research: Research legal questions, case law, statutes and regulations using online legal databases and resources.
- Drafting legal documents: Assisting in preparing legal documents such as memos, pleadings, contracts and agreements under the supervising lawyer’s guidance.
- Document review: Reviewing and analysing legal documents, contracts and correspondence to identify relevant information and key points.
- Client communication: Communicating with clients by email, telephone or video conference to gather information, provide updates and respond to enquiries under the supervising lawyer’s oversight. This area is generally reserved for more advanced interns.
- Case preparation: Assisting in preparing hearings, witness statements and court proceedings by organising case materials, summarising evidence and drafting outlines or presentations. This area is generally reserved for more advanced interns.
- Legal writing: Practise legal writing by drafting correspondence, pleadings, motions or legal opinions based on the provided guidelines and templates.
- Administrative tasks: Assisting with administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, scheduling and document management using online tools and software.
- Judicial or extrajudicial video hearings: Where applicable (if scheduled and suitable), you may take part in virtual court hearings or negotiations with the opposing party to gain insight into the dynamics and procedures of judicial and extrajudicial proceedings.
- Business development: Help the firm attract new clients and gain insight into law firm marketing. This includes, for example, market research, competitor analysis, creating content for the website, etc.
- Professional development: Take part in virtual training sessions, workshops or seminars offered by the law firm to expand your legal knowledge and professional skills.
- Networking: Use virtual networking opportunities to connect with lawyers, professionals and other interns within the firm or through online legal communities and events.
- Special projects: Work on special projects or assignments given to you by the supervising lawyer. These may include legal research, analysis or other tasks relating to specific practice areas or cases.
- Mentorship and guidance: Receive mentorship from experienced lawyers and legal professionals who can give you feedback, answer questions and offer career advice throughout your internship.
In the short time of an internship, it is generally only possible to actually carry out a few of the items listed above. A key focus lies in working on and with texts. However, by taking part in such activities during your online internship, you can gain insight into the profession, acquire practical experience, develop relevant skills, and lay a building block for a solid foundation for your future career in the legal field.
